The 4 Rules to Follow:
Below you will discover 4 rules that I recommend you follow to set up a professional Facebook profile. Your Facebook profile is the first impression that people will have of you. You want to make sure you are setting a good impression intentionally. Take each rule into consideration as you set up your profile and be sure to make any changes necessary to ensure a professional profile.
1. Consider the Impression you are Giving with your Personal Profile on Facebook.
You only get one first impression. When new friends check out your profile for the first time, they will make the decision whether or not they want to be friends with you based on what they see here.
Your representation from your profile picture, biography and website link must be clearly displayed on Facebook as you want to be known! First of all, do you have a professional picture of yourself for people and your potential friends to recognize you as the professional you are? If not, have a professional photographer take several pictures of you in a professional outfit, suit or attire. Once you have your pictures, you can continuously use them to promote yourself as well as your brand image.
What do you want people to recognize you for? Your biography is a detailed description that involves more than basic facts about your life’s education and work. It also portrays your experience of specific life events. Make sure you include accomplishments that you have done in your topic of interest to ‘WOW’ your audience. Furthermore, you will want to talk in terms of what’s in it for them in terms of what will people benefit from when connecting with and following you.
The last point you want to include is your call to action. That is, for your new contacts to connect with you on social media, your website or newsletter.
Here’s an example:

2. Change the Settings on your Profile to Protect your Friend List.
You work hard for your friends, so it makes sense to protect them. You can change your settings so other people can only see the mutual friends you have rather than your whole list. Block your friend count and adjust your wall settings on Facebook.
It is to your advantage to keep certain information private. By blocking your friend count, your new potential friends will not know how many friends you have, although they will see how many mutual friends you may have with them. The benefit is that even though you may have a low number of Facebook friends, you may give the perception that you have many friends and that you are well connected. This helps in the beginning when you are first building your list.
The other benefit is that you do not want to share your friends list with others who may want to connect with your specific friends that you have built a following with. Don’t allow poachers to access your whole friends list. ACTION STEP: click on your “friends” Tab on your profile page and edit your privacy today.
3. Change the Settings on your Timeline so you have Complete Control of what is Posted
Do not let other people spam your wall. Be in control of what is posted here.
You will also want to adjust your wall settings on your profile so that you must review what people want to post before allowing it on your timeline. This prevents friends from posting unwanted ads that your friends will see you being associated with. Prevent posts like potential sales of products you do not support or those that people may try to post porn on your wall, which can be embarrassing if you want a professional image. Protect what goes on your wall and allow posts that you resonate with because your friends will potentially see these posts.
HOW to set up your security on your Facebook timeline:
Timeline review lets you choose whether posts you’re tagged in appear on your Timeline. Keep in mind that posts you’re tagged in can also appear in News Feed, search and other places on Facebook.
When people you are not friends with tag you in a post, they automatically go to Timeline review. If you would also like to review tags by friends, you can turn on Timeline review for tags from anyone.
How to turn on Timeline review:
1. Click at the top right of any Facebook page and select Settings
2. In the left column, click Timeline and Tagging
3. Look for the setting Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your Timeline? and click Edit to the far right
4. Select Enabled from the dropdown menu
How to review your timeline:
1.Go to your profile Page and click “View Activity Log” (bottom right on your cover photo)
2. Check your Filters on the left bar. Here you will see what is pending to be allowed on your timeline based on your settings. You may hide or allow posts that you are mentioned or tagged in from here.
4. Keep your Posts Congruent with the Message you want to be Known for
Cleanse your Wall or Page! It is so important to do this if you have never done so…
Go through your page and see what your friends see by clicking the three dots “…” beside the “View Activity Log” on the bottom right side of your cover Photo. Click the 3 dots and click “View As”. This will allow you to see what your friends or public sees when they go to your page. You may want to remove pictures that do not represent you in a professional manner (time to get rid of those old party pictures!). Make sure you remove posts that do not reflect your professional image. Dirty jokes, references to alcohol or drugs, fights, war or any negative messages that are not congruent with your message will be judged as unprofessional depending on your target audience.
Be consistent with your messages to get results. What messages do you want to convey? What images and videos do you support? What do you believe in? These are all questions to ask yourself to be consistent with messages you want to share with your audience. Marketing is simply information that you want your audience to get so that they gain the benefit of your valuable wisdom in a consistent manner. Share messages that support one of your beliefs.
Here is an example: If you want to share information about your belief in “listening”, provide messages supporting the benefits of listening. Go to Google and search for images about “listening quotes” and share these images to share with your audience.
By seeing your congruent posts often, your friends will get the message and comprehend what you are supporting. As you convey and get your message across with your audience, you have the potentiality of having your friends Like, Comment and/or Share your posts. The more your audience resonates with your valuable messages, the more exposure you will get. The more exposure, the more followers you will get which is the result you really need to grow your brand awareness.
So as you can see, by following the 4 simple rules, you will be able to set up a professional profile to attract the audience that want to connect with you. From first impressions to the supportive messages you post, you will be regarded as a professional at what you do and worthy of a LIKE from your potential followers.
